About eCollars
Uncertainty is one of the leading causes of stress. We all feel stress when we are uncertain of what will happen or what we should do in a given situation. Dogs are the same. When animals are confronted with uncertainty they may react in number of different ways including fear or aggression. Dogs that have been obedience trained will not be stressed when confronted with uncertainty simply because they know their handler will take care of the situation. That is why basic obedience training can solve a host of problems that at first seem unrelated. We have had countless dogs come to us with reported aggression problems only to be “cured” through basic obedience lessons by one method or another.
Having said that, we need to be careful not to introduce more stress in the process of training. Not understanding what is expected of us from our superiors is inherently stressful. Allowing the dog to flounder through a command without correction is the same. Straight forward clear communication is essential. Electronic collars are the single most effective communication tool available to the professional trainer. They’re proper use involves a signal and a reward just as in most other training methods. The signal in this case is the stimulation from the e-collar and it can be timed at the exact moment required.
By stimulation I do not mean shock. The trainer will first work with the dog to find the lowest stimulation (stim) that the dog can notice. You can try this on yourself and in most cases you will just feel a slight pulsation. The e-collar should never be used in a way that inflicts a pain response. Settings higher than required to elicit the dog’s attention are abusive and will not be used. The dog will quickly recognize that a stim means to pay attention to the trainer no matter what the other distractions may be. This is simply because the stim is a unique sensation that has only been used to elicit the training response.
The ability to have the dog’s attention at the exact moment necessary allows training to progresses much quicker than with other methods. Many training methods require the dog to make the desired choice of their own accord before the trainer has any input such as a click and reward. That lack of input is stressful if the dog does not know what is expected of him. The stim from the e-collar at just the right instant signals her that an instruction is coming, and no decision on her part is necessary.
Remote collar training is an art and a skill and takes a lot of time to master. In our Unblievable Dog Program we will first teach your dog all the commands you need, then we will meet with you and your dog and through a session that may last two or more hours your dog will show you what he has learned and we will show you how to maintain that training.
