MAC GETS A LEG

Patricia Robertson CDT has been active in the field of dog obedience for more than 17 years. She has trained dogs in obedience work, field work, dog sledding, Rally-O and basic companion dog training. Pat is also the owner of DueNorth Kennels, a year-round, 365 day boarding facility located in the Kawartha Lakes area, that provides boarding and board-and-train services to pet owners.

Pat is the second person in Canada to be awarded the designation Certified Dog Trainer by the International Association of Canine Professionals. Pat is also Past President and current Vice President of the Peterborough and District Obedience Club (PADOC), where she teaches new and experienced pet owners in good canine manners, competitive obedience, and Rally-O, a new, interactive dog sport that combines agility and obedience skills. As a former trainer and competitor in long distance horse races, and a teacher to canoeing students, Pat was thrilled to be able to combine her skills in teaching and training when she joined PADOC as an instructor in 2002.

Recognizing that each dog is an individual, and promoting the use of balance in training, Pat uses a variety of techniques and skills that are tailored to suit each dog she encounters. She has worked with methods that employ lure-reward training, clicker training, traditional obedience commands, and remote collar training. Pat is a graduate of the E-Touch program, a unique approach to using remote collars to teach and train dogs proper behaviour in a very gentle manner.

In addition to teaching dog obedience classes, Pat has also earned obedience and hunting titles on several of her dogs, and remains active in obedience competition. Pat's own dog Maddie, is the first Siberian Husky in Canada to obtain a Rally-O title. Pat has worked as a trial secretary in Rally-O trials and obedience trials and the Canadian Kennel Club has certified Pat as a recognized tester of the Canine Good Neighbour exam, a voluntary behaviour test that often serves as the foundation for many pet therapy programs.

Pat is a member of the International Association of Canine Professionals (IACP), a group of trainers recommended by Cesar Millan, of National Geographic's The Dog Whisperer. She is also a member of the Canadian Association of Professional Pet Dog Trainers (CAPPDT),  and uses both of these groups to network with other trainers and attend conferences, lectures and workshops to remain on the cutting edge of dog training trends and developments.

The Connection Newspaper recognizes Pat's expertise as a professional dog-training instructor, and publishes a regular column in which she discusses issues about dog behaviour, choosing a puppy, the importance of training, housetraining, and a variety of other topics of interest to pet owners. Some of Pat's previous columns can be seen on PADOC's website.
When she is not teaching people to train their dogs, Pat's life still revolves around canines. She owns and operates DueNorth Kennels, which typically houses between nine to 12 dogs at any one time. With Pat's 30-year background in nursing, and certificate in pet first aid, there are many DueNorth clients who refuse to leave their dogs with anyone else!

Pat is also an active member of the Canadian Kennel Club and the Flatcoated Retriever Society of Canada. She is on the board of directors for the Canadian Association of Professional Pet Dog Trainers. Pat has recently become an Obedience judge for the North American Mixed Breed Registry. She is currently working with her two Flatcoated Retrivers, OTCH Darkdance Tanner at DueNorth, JH, WC, CGN, RN and his brother OTCH Darkdance Rob Roy WC, JH,CGN, RN (CARO and CKC). Both boys are now working on their Masters Level Obedience. Two of Pat's dogs have attained Top Dog status, in 2006 Maddie was the second highest obedience Siberian in Canada and Tanner was number 5 flatcoat in 2008. More recently Addie- CH Clancuddy's Eowyn of Riddermark CDX was number 1 Irish Red and White Setter in Canda. Pat is easily the most qualified instructor in Peterborough County.
